SANTA ANA, CA – Bowers Museum is thrilled to announce an enlightening lecture celebrating the life and legacy of Lin Yu-shan, one of Taiwan’s most distinguished artists, presented by Dr. Kuo-Sheng Lai. Titled “Lin Yu-shan and a Century of Taiwan’s Art,” this captivating lecture will take place on March 12, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm at the Norma Kershaw Auditorium.

Lin Yu-shan’s remarkable journey spanned nearly a century, from 1907 to 2004. As one of the “Three Youths” who triumphed in the inaugural Taiwan Art Exhibition, Lin Yu-shan holds a significant place in Taiwan’s artistic heritage. Renowned for his mastery of ink painting and Tōyōga, a distinct style akin to Nihonga introduced to Taiwan by the Japanese, Lin Yu-shan’s oeuvre offers a profound insight into the evolution of Taiwanese art in the 20th century.

Dr. Kuo-Sheng Lai, Assistant Curator at the National Palace Museum (Southern Branch) and Adjunct Assistant Professor at National Chung Cheng University, brings his vast knowledge to this event. A distinguished expert in the field, Dr. Lai will guide attendees through an exploration of Lin Yu-shan’s diverse styles and their resonance with different epochs in Taiwan’s art history. From the cultural significance of his work to the socio-political context that shaped his artistic vision, Dr. Lai will offer invaluable insights into the rich tapestry of Lin Yu-shan’s contributions.

This event is proudly co-sponsored by the Chinese Cultural Art Council, an affiliate council of the Bowers Museum, and the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Society of USA.
