The theme of this year’s decorations is “American Treasures” honoring the unique heritage of America. Designed by First Lady Melania Trump, the White House shines with the spirit of patriotism.

“This is a joyous time of the year when we decorate the White House for the Christmas season,” the First Lady.  “Our theme honors the heart and spirit of the American people.”

Throughout the month of December, more than 30,000 visitors are expected to view the decorations.

The tradition of the White House Christmas decorations can be dated back to the nineteenth century.  According to the White House History Association, President Benjamin Harrison placed the first Christmas tree in the White House in the Second Floor Oval Room in 1889.

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy began the tradition of selecting a theme for the official White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room in 1961.

The selection of the official White House Christmas tree is overseen by the National Christmas Tree Association.

2018 Official White House Christmas Ornament

The official White House Christmas ornament is designed by the White House History Association.  Every year since 1981, an ornament has been made to honor a president or significant White House anniversary.

This year’s ornament honors Harry S. Truman, the thirty third president of the United States.
