Los Angeles—The relations between China and the United States have managed to forge ahead and achieved historic progress over the past four decades, “despite twists and turns, ups and downs”, according to China’s top diplomat in Los Angeles.
2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the U.S.-China diplomatic ties. On December 16, 1978, the two countries issued the Joint Communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations. In 1979, then President Jimmy Carter granted China the full diplomatic recognition.
“As we look back at the past four decades, the development of China-U.S. relations is unprecedented both in breadth and depth,” said Ambassador Zhang Ping, the Consul General of China in Los Angeles at a reception today in downtown Los Angeles.
“It has not only brought tremendous benefits to our two countries and peoples, but also promoted peace and prosperity of the world,” Zhang added.
Talking about the current trade disputes between China and the U.S., Zhang said, “China-U.S. relationship is so important that it is not in our interests to see it fall into confrontation.”
Around 300 local elected officials, business leaders and Chinese community representatives attended the reception in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the U.S.-China diplomatic ties.
Anthony Rendon, the speaker of the California State Assembly, said that California is proud of its relations with China, and understands China’s leadership in global economy and culture.
China is California’s largest trading partner, the third largest export destination for goods, and the fourth export destination for services, according to Zhang.
