West Covina Councilman Sentenced for Driving under the Influence

Los Angeles–A West Covina councilman was sentenced today for driving under the influence and crashing his car in June, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Michael Herman Spence, 50, pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a drug.

Following his plea, the defendant was immediately sentenced by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stacy Wiese to three years of summary probation.

The defendant also was ordered to attend a three-month substance abuse program and 26 Narcotics Anonymous or Methamphetamine Anonymous classes.

Furthermore, the defendant must attend a one-day Mothers Against Drunk Driving course.

A restitution hearing is scheduled for Jan. 23, 2017, at the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Prosecutors said on June 12 the defendant was driving under the influence of a drug when he struck a pole with his vehicle near Azusa Avenue and Cypress Street in Covina.
