Irvine Road Construction & Improvement Projects Taking Place March 15-21

IRVINE-In addition to the projects listed below that may impact your commute, you can find information on work being done to enhance our City on the Capital Improvement Projects Map and the Road Construction Map.

Sand Canyon Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation

Asphalt work will be done along Sand Canyon Avenue from Barranca Parkway to the 5 Freeway.

The work will take place in both directions of Sand Canyon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16 – Sunday, March 17.

It will also include freeway on and offramp closures in both directions.

Pavement Rehabilitation and Slurry Seal Weekend Work

As part of this year’s Annual Street Rehabilitation and Slurry Seal project, work will be done this Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Traffic will be affected at the following locations; please use alternate routes on both dates if possible.

  • Culver Drive – Bryan Avenue to Meadowood
  • Irvine Center Drive – Harvard Avenue to Culver Drive
  • Barranca Parkway – Intersections between Culver Drive and Jeffrey Avenue

Jeffrey Open Space Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge

Work begins this week on the Jeffrey Open Space Trail bridge that will span the I-5 Freeway and Walnut Avenue south of Jeffrey Road.

Intermittent lane closures and night work are scheduled along the I-5 Freeway and there will also be intermittent closures of the Cypress Village bike trail.

Walnut Avenue will be closed between Jeffrey Road and the southbound 5 Freeway on and offramps from 11 p.m. Friday, March 15, to 7 a.m. March 16. View a map of the closure.

The Jeffrey Open Space Trail bridge is a crucial step in linking trails extending from the Pacific Ocean to the Santa Ana Mountains. Work will include the construction of a new reinforced concrete pedestrian overcrossing, retaining walls and approaches; fencing and lighting; trail pavement; electrical systems; and more. The project is expected to be finished in summer 2026.

Planned Traffic Signal Shutdowns

As part of the ongoing traffic signal permit project, work continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday, March 15, at the following intersections:

  • Alton Parkway and Morgan
  • Jamboree and Birch
  • Main Street and Gillette

Note: The traffic signal at Jamboree and Birch is also scheduled to be shut down on Thursday, March 21.

Every effort will be made to keep traffic flowing and minimize disruptions, but delays should be expected. Please use alternate routes when possible.
