Unhoused trapped in storm and State created Dangers by The City of Sacramento
Sacramento–
Predicted Atmospheric River hits the Unhoused community hardest. While the City of Sacramento abated and swept rudimentary precautions prior to predicted storm placing hundreds in greater danger in the middle of a weather warning By the National Weather service.
Sacramento Homeless Union steps in as emergency responders to the unhoused community. Respites access was interrupted and bus/light rail services shut down to respites.
The Sacramento Homeless Union demands an Immediate Cease and desist of sweeps/Abatements and the immediate preservation of property including RV, Vehicles, and personal property removed from the unhoused in sweeps pending filings of lawsuits from January 1, 2024 to present.
Sacramento Homeless Union rescues trapped seniors and unhoused individuals in the midst of the atmospheric River fighting high winds and extreme conditions.
On february 2nd 2024 I, Crystal Sanchez sent an email addressed to local municipalities, community leaders and attorneys as well as Attorney General Rob Bonta , Senator Angelique Ashby and representative Doris Matsui’s office addressing the violent sweeps that the new Incident Management team was conducting ( 4-6 times a day) it stated the following :
Subject :Violence and death sentence to the unhoused In the City of Sacramento
Email: The lives of approximately 20,000 unhoused people are being forced to surrender their survival gear and face death or face arrest. This is seriously what is happening to every unhoused individual in the City of Sacramento right now!! No warning, violent sweeps are taking place where law enforcement and city contractors are coming in with tow trucks , dump trucks, claws to remove people from the street.. Even as I send this I am receiving notifications of police at a camps in the rain with no warning kicking people out.
They only let them know the claw is coming to remove their property off public property. They have created a team that replicates the IMT from 9/11 (homeland security) basically treating the unhoused as terrorists and a terrorist threat. They are taking property, arresting them when they try and have anything to say about it they are put in cuffs while police take their stuff. We need help!!! The wait lists have over 2500 for shelter. They are leaving people on the side of the road in their underwear. Even in this extreme weather they are sweeping.
I am super overwhelmed they don’t have anywhere to go. We need to place a stop on all the crushing of vehicles from the different contractors the city is working with . The city protocol itself seems illegal, no due process, violations of property rights, rights to safety ect. People are literally being forced with no survival gear to the streets.
They are violating multiple federal laws and mock the federal court presences publicly. They are not sheltering or storing property. They are separating people from services (including county partnership) and community connections leaving them to the elements and to be victimized on Sacramento streets. #No MoreDeathOnTheStreets （Sacramento Homeless Union）
