WASHINGTON—A record 215 Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AA & NH/PI) candidates ran for state and federal office, including in U.S. territories, in the 2023 election cycle. Every year, APAICS builds a comprehensive database of candidates through its AA & NH/PI Candidate Pipeline, which monitors general election results for state and federal elections nationwide. The Pipeline also includes information about AA & NH/PI candidates who ran at the state level.
“AA & NH/PI candidates running for office increased over 40% this election cycle compared to 2021. With 123 projected winners, there are at least 659 AA & NH/PI elected officials nationwide,” said Madalene Xuan-Trang Mielke, president and CEO of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). “Additionally, 63 of 98 AA & NH/PI women candidates won their election. APAICS applauds all the AA & NH/PI candidates who ran this cycle, many of whom are first-time candidates.”
APAICS programs focus on developing leadership, building public policy knowledge, and filling the political pipeline for AA & NH/PIs to pursue local, state, and federal public office. Through its National and RegionalLeadership Academies and Women’s Collective, APAICS provides non-partisan leadership training programs for current elected officials and individuals seeking to run for public office.
