Mayor Bass Convenes Hundreds of Civic Leaders to Mark the Closing of Latino Heritage Month
LOS ANGELES – Mayor Bass marked the end of Latino Heritage Month by convening hundreds of civic leaders at Los Angeles City Hall yesterday to celebrate and honor civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, actor Xolo Maridueña, actor George Lopez and California State University of Northridge Professor of Central American Studies Dr. Douglas Carranza.
“Los Angeles is special because of our rich culture and diversity, and in our city, we stand together as Angelenos. From September 15 to this Sunday, October 15, the city has been busy honoring Latino Heritage Month with events showcasing the culture, flavors, music and contributions of all the Latino communities that have called Los Angeles their home, and I look forward to continuing that celebration year-round because Latinos make Los Angeles,” said Mayor Karen Bass.
Elected officials, private sector leaders and nonprofit partners attended the celebration in honor of Latino Heritage Month. The event included performances by Los Angeles Unified School District Folklórico group de VAPA with Banda Alma de Los Ángeles and the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles.
“Mayor Bass added, “The history of Latinos is the history of this city. There would not be a Los Angeles without the first pobladores that founded this city not too far from where we stand and the diverse communities and generations of Latinos that make up half of our city today. Thank you to our honorees, extraordinary leaders and partners for your contributions to Los Angeles.”
