World Refugee Day Event Celebrates the Contributions of Refugees and Immigrants in California’s Most Diverse County

LOS ANGELES — As part of June Refugee Awareness Month activities in Los Angeles County, the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) will partner with the World Refugee Forum of Los Angeles and local agencies for “Breaking Bread,” a virtual celebration of World Refugee Day.

Home to more than 10 million residents, representing 140 cultures, and as many as 224 languages, L.A. County is one of eight California counties with the largest population of refugees.  During this virtual event, refugees will share their success stories, ethnic food recipes, a cooking demonstration and participate in a forum to discuss challenges they face living in California.

Friday, June 18, 2021, 5:30 p.m.

This event will be hosted virtually.  Please register to attend at the World Refugee Day Eventbrite page: https://worldrefugeedayla.eventbrite.com.

BACKGROUND:

DPSS and its dedicated community partners work together to empower refugees to make successful transitions toward independence and self-sufficiency.  For refugee individuals and families forced to flee their home countries due to religious and political persecution, war, and civil unrest, the department offers employment training and temporary Refugee Cash Assistance services to help them resettle in L.A. County with great success.

The department is grateful to its community partner organizations, including Interfaith Refugee and Immigration Services, International Institute of Los Angeles, International Rescue Committee, Jobs Vision Success SoCal, and the Refugee Forum of Los Angeles.
