Bomb threat leads to evacuation at Jewish Community Center

Irvine- The Irvine Police Department responded Monday to a report of a bomb threat called in to the Merage Jewish Community Center at 1 Federation Way in Irvine. Staff at the Jewish Community Center began an evacuation of that facility, as well as Tarbut V’Torah school, which is located on the same property, at approximately 4:40 p.m. About 1,000 people were safely evacuated; no injuries have been reported.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb-sniffing dogs were called in to perform a search of the location, however, nothing suspicious was located.

There have been reports today of threats called in to Jewish community centers and schools across the country. It is unclear at this time whether the threat in Irvine is tied to any other such threat.

The investigation into this case is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Irvine Police Detective Michael Moore at 949-724-7316.

It’s unclear whether the incident is related to a wave of bomb threats made Monday to Jewish centers and schools across the nation.
