Supreme Court to Review Obama’s Power on Deportation Policy
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it will decide whether President Obama has the authority to declare that millions of illegal immigrants be allowed to remain and work in the United States without fear of deportation. Latino Voters Surging 40%
The number of Latinos eligible to vote is surging, 40% higher than it was just eight years ago, and education levels are rising, according to a new report by Pew Research Center. The Latino electorate is also young. Adults age 18-35 make up nearly half of the record of 27.3 million Latinos eligible to vote in this year’s presidential election. However, the percentage likely to actually cast ballots in November continues to lag behind other major racial and ethnic groups. (Los Angeles Times)
Deaths from Drug Overdoses Surges in the U.S.
Deaths from drug overdoses have surged in nearly every county across the United States, driven largely by an explosion in addiction to prescription painkillers and heroin. Some of the largest concentrations of overdose deaths were in Appapachia and the Southwest, according to new estimates released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of these deaths reached a new peak in 2014: 47,055 people, or the equivalent of about 125 Americans every day. (New York Times)
