LOS ANGELES – In honor of Women’s History Month, the City’s first female Mayor, City Attorney, and Fire Chief joined women leaders at a breakfast reception – “Women Uplifting Women” – on Friday, March 15, 2024 at the Downtown Women’s Center (“DWC”), the only organization in L.A. serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness. Other guests included DWC CEO Amy Turk and Jennifer Tobkin, Chair of the City Attorney Women’s Association (“CAWA”). Celebrating the strength and diversity of women, the reception welcomed approximately 50 women receiving support from the DWC as well as 50 members of CAWA.
Since 1995, March has been designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation to celebrate women’s contributions in U.S. history.
“City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto is a mighty leader who I am proud to call a friend, and I am also so proud to serve with another mighty lady, Fire Chief Kristin Crowley. Please give these two mighty ladies a round of applause,” said Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during today’s event. “Let me thank all of you that are here today. Thank you to the women and the residents of the Downtown Women’s Center. Know that we do not forget you, and we want to continue to support you until you are fully back on your feet, integrated back into the world and we’re there to celebrate your success.”
“Too often, the triumphs of women experiencing homelessness are not shared and their accomplishments go unnoticed,” said Hydee Feldstein Soto, Los Angeles City Attorney. “But as we mark Women’s History Month today, in addition to honoring the trailblazers before us, how wonderful it is to cheer on the powerful women whose stories are unfolding right in front of us here at the Downtown Women’s Center. Let us all continue to create a city in which every woman, regardless of her past, can thrive.”
“As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let us remember that history is not just about the past; it’s about the present and, most importantly, the future we are building together,” said Fire Chief Kristin M. Crowley of the Los Angeles Fire Department. “Each woman who finds refuge and a new beginning here at the Downtown Women’s Center is adding her own chapter to that history, proving that with support and opportunity, there are no limits to what can be achieved.
“For Women’s History Month, the City Attorney Women’s Association (“CAWA”) was honored to co-host this celebratory event with City Attorney Feldstein Soto,” said CAWA Chair Jennifer Tobkin. “CAWA’s mission is to promote the career development, quality of work life, and engagement of women in the L.A. Hosting events like this is one way we try to fulfill that mission, and CAWA is thrilled to bring greater awareness to the Downtown Women’s Center and the important work it provides to women in the process”.
