100 Surfers to Conquer Waves at Venice’s Breakwater Open

VENICE, CA —Building on the momentum of its successful debut, the Venice Surfing Association’s Breakwater Open returns on Saturday, October 14, with over 100 competitors anticipated to hit the waves.

VSA’s 2023 contest series began in February with VSA Grom Day, an event dedicated to the younger surfers in our community. The event was followed by The Southside Classic, The Summer Showdown, The Northside Pier Fest, and now the Breakwater Open.

“Every contest is a manifestation of our dream, weaving community spirit, talent, and local enterprise,” said Alix Gucovsky, co-founder of VSA.

Each contest has a unique poster and tee shirt art designed by local creatives. Returning for his second year, tattoo artist Steve Laylani designed the art. Trophies are made by talented local craftsmen Brock Mayeux and Norman Antonio from reclaimed wood.

This year, legendary skate brand Dogtown will be the tentpole event sponsor. “This is a huge honor as Jim Muir and Dogtown are such an iconic part of Venice’s culture and history. Jim and Dogtown have been huge supporters of the Venice Surfing Association from day one.”

The Waterfront, The Venice Whaler, Mercedes Grill, Love Amore Pizza, and Bonne Bouffe catering are joining the league of supporters. Behind the scenes, a brigade of dedicated VSA volunteers ensures the magic unfolds seamlessly.

Acknowledging special contributions, Gucovsky said, “Pam Anderson’s scholarship initiative, in memory of her late husband Scott, embodies the inclusivity we strive for, ensuring everyone gets a chance to ride their dream wave.”

A shoutout was also reserved for the LA County Lifeguards. “Many of them are a part of our surfing family. Their presence, either on the board or cheering, means the world to us,” Gucovsky noted.

The first heat will hit the water at 8 AM at the Venice Pier.

As the sun sets this season, VSA already has its eyes on the horizon. “We’re setting our sights on bigger swells. VSA aims to roll out a West Coast Boardriders team to match skills with California’s finest,” said Gucovsky.
