City of El Monte Approves Nearly $500,000 to Enhance Public Safety with Technological Investments for El Monte Police Department

El Monte Police Department will purchase automated license plate readers and raven audio gunshot detection devices to aid in crime prevention and when responding to incidents

El Monte, CA – On April 18, the El Monte City Council approved the purchase of thirty-eight (38) automated license plate readers (ALPRs) and four (4) Raven Audio Gunshot Detection Devices for the El Monte Police Department. The total cost of the new technology will be $499,300, and the City will be using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and the City’s Asset Forfeiture Funding.

“The City is committed to enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of our police department with the investment in additional technological assets to increase public safety,” said Alma Martinez, El Monte City Manager, “These purchases can be supported and funded without creating a fiscal impact on the City’s budget.”

The ALPRs are advanced camera systems that will be strategically placed on points of entry and exit, and major intersections throughout the city. These cameras can quickly capture license plate numbers along with the date, time, and location. In addition, the Raven Audio Gunshot Detection Device can detect gunshots, identify the source of the sound, and work with the ALPR system to provide valuable evidence to the El Monte police officers responding to an incident.

“Our top priority is always the safety of our community. These cutting-edge technologies will significantly enhance our ability to prevent and investigate crime, which will help us keep our community safer,” shared Jake Fisher, El Monte Chief of Police. “Having this technology will ensure that we are addressing gun violence and preventing criminal activity in the City.”

The City will partner with Flock Safety for the purchase of ALPRS and Raven Audio Gunshot Detection Devices. Flock Safety is a trusted partner that has installed over 1,000 ALPRs in more than 500 police departments across thirty-eight (38) states.
