Artist Talk: Jesse Liu X Art Critic Shana Nys Dambrot

1350 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291

Apr 02, 2:30 PM – 4 PM — ends Apr 02, 2023

To celebrate the closing of the exhibition on April 2nd, we’re excited to invite you to an artist talk by the artist Jesse Liu and art critic Shana Nys Dambrot at 2:30pm.

Shana Nys Dambrot is an art critic, curator, and author based in Downtown LA. She is the Arts Editor for the L.A. Weekly, and a contributor to Flaunt and Artillery. She studied Art History at Vassar College, writes book and catalog essays, speaks at galleries, schools, and cultural institutions nationally, is an award-winning member of the LA Press Club and a recipient of the 2022 Rabkin Prize for Art Criticism. She’ll be discussing Jesse’s artistic practice, inspirations, and influences, as well as the themes and ideas behind the current exhibition. Jesse and Shana will also engage in a Q&A session, giving you the opportunity to ask your own questions and learn more about the artist’s creative process.

Following the artist talk, there will be a dance performance, Betwin, performed by choereogpraher Yolanda-Tianyi Shao and actor Olivia Xing, accompanied by live music by Drew Sensue-Weinstein This piece will explore how memories exist between the intricate details of our hair, body, and gestures and also the ways in which our memories and experiences are shaped by the perspectives of others. Putting the performance in the gallery setting create an “between” state. The audience in the gallery, different from those for a staged performance, are between a constant attention and a mindless roam. This kind of viewing putting on the female performing bodies is a nuanced and worth exploring. This piece is created by Yolanda, a Chinese choreographer who works interdisciplinary with animators, composers, theater directors, actors, filmmakers, sound designers and photographers. She holds an MFA degree in Choreography from California Institute of the Arts.

This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into the mind of a talented artist and engage in a thoughtful conversation about contemporary art and culture. The event is free to attend, but RSVP is required.  We hope to see you there!
