Statement from Supervisor Hilda L. Solis on Rehiring Previous Fired Sheriff’s Deputy

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released the following statement regarding the recent rehiring of a Sheriff’s deputy, Michael Courtial, who had been previously fired for excessive use of force:

“I am disappointed that the Sheriff’s Department continues to rehire deputies that have been credibly accused of domestic violence, unnecessary use of force, and other dischargeable offenses.

The rehiring of Sheriff’s deputies with troubling disciplinary histories must be fully vetted by a fair, transparent, and accountable process that prioritizes public safety and protects department morale. The Board has taken a number of official actions, up to and including litigation, to address the public’s very real and substantial concerns about the Sheriff’s Department’s rehiring of these deputies.

LA County residents and Sheriff’s Department personnel need to be able to trust that those who carry a gun and a badge are there to protect and serve the public, and that they will not harm and self-serve.”
