Community to Preview Street Design Changes Proposed in Glendora Avenue Revitalization Project at Open Street Festival in West Covina

West Covina—The City of West Covina and the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Go Humancampaign invite residents and visitors to bike, walk, skate or roll to Active West Covina, a free open-street festival to be held on Saturday, July 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The goal of the event is to allow residents and visitors to test out and provide feedback to the City on potential street improvements proposed in the Glendora Avenue Revitalization Project.

Active West Covina will showcase the vision for a street redesign that makes Glendora Avenue the central gathering place for a newly created downtown area in West Covina. Street improvements featured at the event will include a Great Lawn and large pedestrian walkway that make the street a more enjoyable place for people to walk, shop and dine. Glendora Avenue between Lakes Drive and Glendora Square will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event.

Active West Covina will bring together friends and neighbors to enjoy free family-friendly activities including community performances, a street magician, art installations, giveaways, music, the local farmer’s market and more.

West Covina Mayor Lloyd Johnson and SCAG President Alan D. Wapner will speak at a brief press event on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the event hub located at 256 S. Glendora Avenue between Lakes Drive and Dalewood.

SCAG’s Go Human campaign is working with cities and counties across Southern California to develop open streets events and safety demonstration projects, such as Active West Covina, which promote safety while encouraging people to walk and bike more.

“Investing in active transportation infrastructure and developing a more walkable downtown promotes economic activity,” said SCAG President Alan D. Wapner. “Making our streets safer and pedestrian-friendly increases foot traffic and visibility for local businesses.”

The public is intended to experience what these proposed changes could be like permanently. Attendees are encouraged to attend this free open-street event on foot or by bike, scooter or skateboard.

Active West Covina is the product of a partnership between the City of West Covina, Clean Transportation Funding – Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee and SCAG’s Go Human campaign. For more information, visit GoHumanSoCal.org/ActiveWestCovina.  Funding for this event was provided by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and Los Angeles County Measure M which funds transportation related projects and demonstrations.
