New York—“Solve at the United Nations”, an initiative by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in collaboration with the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), was launched at the UN headquarters in New York on March 7 aiming to develop and implement solutions to the pressing challenges facing the world.
Leaders from variety of industries, sectors and organizations, serving as expert judges, gathered to select solutions presented by young innovators to refugee education, carbon contributions and chronic diseases. The selected innovators will become Solvers, and be community members of Solve at MIT.
Kevin Xu, the CEO of MEBO International, a California and Beijing based intellectual property Management Company, attended the live pitch event as a Solve advisor, and interacted with young talents from around the world, encouraging them to address the most difficult issues.
“It is my great honor to be a part of this initiative which will benefit the future generations,” said Xu, who is not a stranger to such an initiative. At the Clinton Global Initiatives University 2016, he shared his experience, entrepreneurship and expertise with more than 1200 innovative student leaders at the University of California, Berkeley. “It is an undertaking conducive to the mankind to train leaders with global vision among younger generations, and support their world-changing ideas and proposals.”
It is learned that 6 proposals were selected during this event.
“To achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, we need solutions, we need innovation and we need genuine partnership,” said Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. “Today, an unprecedented 65 million people around the world have been displaced due to conflict and disaster. There are 21 million refugees. Half are under the age of 18. We cannot allow them to become a lost generation.” “Working for the Goals is not charity, it is self-interest for us and those who will follow. It is investment in preventing future disaster, conflict and crisis.”
“Solve” was first launched at Massachusetts Institute of Technology to solve the world’s most pressing challenges through open innovation and partnership.
The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) is a global initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in furthering the realization of the purposes and mandate of the Organization through activities and research in a shared culture of intellectual social responsibility.
