Los Angeles–Mementos from the criminal justice system in early 21st century Los Angeles County were stowed away on July 7 as officials placed a new time capsule in the Hall of Justice.
District Attorney Jackie Lacey’s contributions to the metal box included a note, an organizational chart of the office, her challenge coin, a Bureau of Investigation challenge coin and an office biennial report.
“I included a few items in the time capsule that I hope show future generations what we were working on to address the world we lived in with an eye toward the future,” District Attorney Lacey said during the ceremony outside the Hall of Justice.
“The challenge coin that I included states as its theme: ‘Fighting for Justice,’” she added. “It truly is my hope that when this time capsule is opened, that our generation’s efforts – Fighting for Justice – have paid off. That this county and the criminal justice system are better.”
Items from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the county’s Chief Executive Office and the offices of the five county supervisors also were included in the time capsule. A DVD of the October 2014 Hall of Justice Re-Dedication Ceremony, a county flag and baseball trading cards from the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation were among the contributions.
The District Attorney’s Color Guard also participated in the ceremony.
Senior Investigator Edgar Murguia placed the capsule in the Hall of Justice’s cornerstone on the northeast corner of the 91-year-old Civic Center structure, which was shuttered in 1994 after the Northridge earthquake.
The building re-opened last year and serves as headquarters for the District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Department
A time capsule was placed in the Hall of Justice when it was constructed in 1925. It was opened in 2014 during the renovation of the building.
