Another hiker dies on Mt. Baldy, prompting closure of trails

A 47-year-old man died Saturday after he slipped and fell off the side of Mt. Baldy, the second person to die this week along trails at the mountain. Dong Xing Liu, who was known as Tony Liu, was hiking with his wife in the Icehouse Saddle area of Mt. Baldy when they both slipped and fell from the trail, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The incident was reported shortly after 5 p.m. A helicopter rescue crew located Liu, 47, and his wife about 5:30 p.m. But rescuers could not reach them until after 8 p.m., when Liu, a resident of Temple City, was pronounced dead. His wife was taken to the hospital — her condition was unknown. (LA Times)

On eve of New Hampshire vote, poll shows Sanders, Trump well ahead

On the eve of New Hampshire’s presidential primaries, a new CNN Poll of Polls finds both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are holding on to substantial leads in their respective races, but each faces an opponent whose support is on the rise. Sanders’ 54% to 40% advantage over Hillary Clinton is down slightly from a 55% to 37% lead in the previous Poll of Polls. No public polling has found Clinton in the lead in New Hampshire since November. Trump tops the GOP field with 31%, well ahead of Marco Rubio’s 15%. Rubio has picked up four points since the previous New Hampshire Poll of Polls, the biggest change in the averages in the last week. Ted Cruz follows with 13%, John Kasich at 11% and Jeb Bush at 10%. Wisconsin Couple Busted For Letting 9-Year-Old Drive

Jason Roth and Amanda Eggert are facing criminal charges after authorities say they found the two highly intoxicated in their pickup truck and the woman’s 9-year-old daughter behind the wheel. Polk County Sheriff’s Office Roth and Eggert got into trouble on Jan. 30 when police, responding to reports of an “erratic driver” on a rural road, found the couple’s pickup truck at a boat launch along the Apple River — and the woman’s daughter behind the wheel, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. There was also a year-old baby strapped into a car seat, according to the newspaper. Jason Roth and Amanda Eggert both pleaded not guilty in Polk County Circuit Court to felony charges of recklessly endangering safety and neglecting a child, officials confirmed. (NBC)

Giant Royal Caribbean ship damaged in ‘extreme’ storm will return to port

Damage from a powerful storm sent one of the world’s newest and biggest cruise ships back to port on Monday. The “extreme wind and sea conditions” that struck the Royal Caribbean’s 168,666-ton Anthem of the Seas on Sunday, forced the captain to confine passengers to their cabins until the storm passed early Monday. The cruise line, in a statement sent to USA TODAY, said the fierce conditions that hit as the ship sailed south from the New York area to Port Canaveral, Fla., were unexpected.Four passengers were injured during the event, though none seriously, according to spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez. The ship is returning to Bayonne, N.J., its home port, and the remainder of the voyage is being cancelled. (USA Today)

President Obama Wants $1.8 Billion to Fight Zika Virus

President Obama is asking Congress to provide $1.8 billion in emergency funding to fight the Zika virus, the mosquito-borne illness that could be causing the proliferation of a rare birth defect in some Latin American countries. The president will submit a formal request to Congress on Monday requesting money to up increase mosquito control programs, help build response and support capacities in states and territories where transmission is possible, expand research into the link between the virus and birth defects, and help countries currently facing the virus keep it from spreading.
