Santa Ana winds to bring warming to Southern California, also fire danger(KPCC)

The National Weather Service says the northeast winds will last into early next week.The offshore flow will produce gusts of 40 mph to 50 mph in the mountains and 35 mph to 45 mph in wind-prone valleys, making travel difficult for drivers of high-profile vehicles.Temperatures will top the 80s by Sunday.Combined with low relative humidity, the winds will also elevate wildfire danger.

One person sitting in a parked car was killed and three people were injured Friday when a huge construction crane collapsed in lower Manhattan as workers tried to lower and secure it against rising winds.The victim is described as a 38-year-old man.The injured were hit by falling debris. Two are in serious condition.

The U.S. economy added just 151,000 jobs in January while unemployment dropped slightly, to 4.9 percent, according to the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists had expected to see about 190,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, which has held steady at 5 percent the past few months, dropped slightly to 4.9 percent. It’s the first time unemployment has fallen below 5 percent since the recession.

BMX and X Games star Dave Mirra dies at 41 in apparent suicide (LA Times)

Pro BMX biker Dave Mirra, who was one of the most decorated athletes in X Games history, was found dead Thursday of an apparent suicide. He was 41. Mirra was a beloved figure in the world of extreme sports, and his name headlined several BMX video games.  Until the 2013 X Games in Munich, he held the record for the most medals in history with 24. Of those, 14 were gold medals.
