San Gabriel Valley Regional Water Agencies Provide Water Supply Update
Monterey Park, Calif., – The San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District (SGVMWD), in partnership with the Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster and the City of Monterey Park, hosted a regional media briefing today to provide an overview of current water supply conditions, ongoing regional planning efforts, and the collaborative work underway to maintain a reliable water supply for local communities.
The briefing provided updates on California’s imported water supplies, groundwater conditions within the Main San Gabriel Basin, regional infrastructure investments, ongoing planning for the Delta Conveyance Project, and coordinated efforts to address emerging challenges such as invasive golden mussels.
“As California’s water landscape continues to evolve, reliable water management depends on planning, investment, and strong partnerships,” said Jose Reynoso, General Manager of the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District. “By working together across agencies, we are better prepared for changing conditions while continuing to provide dependable water supplies for the communities we serve.”
SGVMWD provided an overview of the State Water Project, current 2026 allocation levels, and actions the District has taken to diversify its water supply portfolio, including participation in the Yuba Accord water transfer program and agreements to secure additional supplemental imported water supplies. Officials also discussed the District’s continued participation in planning efforts for the Delta Conveyance Project, which is intended to improve the long-term reliability and resilience of California’s State Water Project.
The Main San Gabriel Basin Watermaster provided an update on the condition of the region’s groundwater basin, which supplies approximately 80 percent of the area’s water needs. The presentation highlighted the Watermaster’s role in administering the adjudicated basin, coordinating groundwater replenishment, and managing the resource to support sustainable use for current and future generations.
The City of Monterey Park shared information on local water system operations, infrastructure improvements, and community conservation initiatives that complement regional efforts to promote water-use efficiency and long-term resource stewardship.
The participating agencies emphasized that California’s water system relies on a balanced approach that includes imported water, local groundwater resources, infrastructure investments, conservation, and regional collaboration. Together, these efforts help strengthen the San Gabriel Valley’s resilience during periods of drought while supporting the long-term reliability of the region’s water supplies.
