Governor Newsom Endorses Fryday for California Lieutenant Governor
Sacramento– Weeks before voting starts, Governor Gavin Newsom today weighed into the Lieutenant Governor’s race—announcing his endorsement of Josh Fryday.

“Seven years ago, I asked Josh Fryday to serve in my administration, and he’s exceeded every expectation,” said Governor Newsom. He built the California Service Corps into a service force larger than the Peace Corps, stood up the first Climate Action Corps in the country, and brought a veteran’s discipline to every challenge I put in front of him. Right now, Donald Trump is coming after California’s funding, our environment, and our people. The Lieutenant Governor’s office is not a place for on-the-job training. Josh has been in this fight, and he’s ready to lead it. I trust Josh to defend California and I’m proud to give him my full endorsement to be California’s next Lieutenant Governor.”
“California needs leaders with guts to stand up to the Trump administration and deliver results for working families like mine,” said Fryday. “I’m proud of what we have accomplished during my time in Governor Newsom’s Cabinet, and I’m ready to continue the same fight as Lieutenant Governor.”
Fryday is a father to three, husband to a public school teacher, Navy veteran, former mayor and member of the Governor’s cabinet. As California’s Chief Service Officer, Fryday has grown the California Service Corps to be larger than the entire Peace Corps. He also led California’s COVID-19 Task Force to support food insecure communities and food banks across the state.
Previously, Fryday served as President of Golden State Opportunity helping expand the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), and as Chief Operating Officer of NextGen Climate, a leading national organization focused on fighting climate change. He also served as Mayor and on the City Council in his hometown of Novato. From 2009 to 2013, Josh served as an Officer in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). He worked on the Military Commissions in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and testified before the U.S. Senate standing up for the rule of law. He also served in Japan, where he assisted the Navy’s 7th Fleet’s Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief efforts during Operation Tomodachi following the 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear disaster.
