“Guocui Cup” Peking Opera Festival Bridges China–U.S. Culture in Los Angeles

Laguna Woods, CA — The 2026 “Guocui Cup” China–U.S. Cultural Arts Festival Peking Opera Special Performance was held at the Laguna Woods Performing Arts Center on April 4th, bringing together artists, officials, and community leaders to celebrate traditional Chinese culture and cross-cultural exchange.

Hosted by the China–U.S. Cultural Arts Federation, the festival highlighted Peking Opera as a treasured form of Chinese performing arts. Through classic performances and innovative presentations, the event offered American audiences a closer look at the depth and beauty of this centuries-old tradition.

Consul Chen Fenghua of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles noted the historical legacy of Mei Lanfang, whose early 20th-century U.S. performances introduced Peking Opera to Western audiences, calling the event a continuation of that cultural connection.

Willian Zhang, President of the China–U.S. Cultural Arts Federation, emphasized that the organization was founded to build a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures through the arts. He highlighted the importance of preserving traditional culture while engaging younger generations through education and international platforms.

Laguna Woods Mayor Annie McCary welcomed attendees and praised the event’s cultural significance.

The bilingual program featured a mix of youth and professional performers presenting iconic works such as “Farewell My Concubine” and “The Drunken Beauty,” alongside cross-cultural collaborations and traditional highlights like face-changing (Bian Lian).

As a growing platform for international cultural exchange, the “Guocui Cup” festival continues to promote Chinese heritage globally while fostering mutual understanding between China and the United States.
