This Holiday Season, Shop with Intention—Our Local Businesses Depend on it

SBA Highlights Small Business Saturday at Phoenix Bakery

As we head into the Christmas season, many of us are getting ready to shop for the people we love. We put a lot of thought into the gifts we choose, and this year, I ask that we all extend the same intentionality to where we shop. Choosing to support locally owned small businesses isn’t just a feel-good gesture; it’s a powerful investment in the health and recovery of our neighborhoods.

Across our communities, our Main Streets depend on the holiday season to stay afloat. When we support small businesses, we are supporting our neighbors. Small businesses create two out of every three new jobs – and nearly 68 cents of every dollar spent at a local business stays in the community, circulating into local wages, services, and even the revenue base that funds essential public safety and community improvements.

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Phoenix Bakery in Los Angeles.  Founded in 1938, the bakery is supported by members of the Chan family’s third generation, who can be found in various roles alongside loyal employees who have helped the Phoenix Bakery family grow over the years.

Year-end sales are essential for small businesses like Phoenix Bakery to maintain their bottom line.  This holiday season, let’s shop with purpose, support our neighbors, and help our small businesses continue to make our local Main Streets vibrant.
