At the UNE–GSIS Workshop held on the Hanyang campus, faculty and students discussed topics such as AI-assisted journalism, media ethics, and international communication, highlighting how young scholars are vital to bridging academia and industry through innovation.

The session also introduced UNE’s newly launched AI-powered news platform, www.UneCne.AI — an initiative exploring the role of artificial intelligence in multilingual, community-based storytelling across the Asia-Pacific region.

Thought Leadership and Insights

In his opening remarks, Prof. Joohan Ryoo noted that the Asia-Pacific is becoming “the busiest testbed for AI-assisted public communication,” emphasizing that universities and newsrooms must jointly define standards rather than respond passively to change.

President  Jennifer Liu talk with students

Jennifer Liu, CEO of UNE News and KJC International, announced that UNE will open “more doors for Asian students” to create multilingual, AI-assisted media content for real audiences. “If APEC 2025 stands for connection, innovation, and prosperity,” she said, “then media must also connect, innovate, and prosper. Our goal is to empower GSIS students to learn newsroom ethics, AI literacy, and market-driven storytelling — right here in Seoul, during Korea’s APEC year and beyond.”

From ‘Service-as-News’ to Trustworthy AI Content

Introducing the UNE–GSIS AI Multimedia Lab, Prof. Ryoo described it as an applied project to help regional industries and communities understand the social value of AI. Guided by the principle “Service as News, News as Service,” the lab aims to turn marketing and civic messages into credible journalistic content that enhances quality of life and promotes innovation.

Prof. Yaechan Lee, Head of Korean Studies, emphasized that Korea’s “media-first” cultural presence — from K-pop to local storytelling — can inspire community-driven, public-interest journalism. As Korea welcomes APEC leaders, CEOs, and global media representatives from 21 member economies, collaboration with international news organizations is more critical than ever.

Industry Voices and Future Plans

Industry leaders from Mebo to introduced Scholarship plan.

Gang Liu, Vice President of Mebo Group, introduced a new “Quality of Life and Health Innovation Scholarship”  for young researchers, noting that journalism increasingly intersects with health, longevity, and wellness industries — key themes of APEC 2025.

Qijian Quan,  Manager of Mebo Korea and a Hanyang alumnus, encouraged students to take “small daily steps” toward excellence in AI and media, sharing how such habits shaped his own career in international business.

APEC 2025

GSIS doctoral candidates Cho Qiongyin and Ki-Won Lee presented AI applications in healthcare and intelligence analysis, while undergraduate representative Wang Yayi discussed how newsroom workflow design can prepare graduates for global employment in AI-augmented environments.

AI, Trust, and Regional Narratives in the APEC Context

With APEC 2025 elevating AI collaboration, digital trade, and demographic challenges to regional priorities, UNE and GSIS underscored that media innovation must also rebuild public trust. The joint workshop signaled that the future of journalism depends not only on technology, but on shared ethical frameworks and academic partnerships.
