New NHL Street Hockey Programming at LA County Parks

County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation in partnership with National Hockey League and LA County Parks Foundation bring new Street Hockey to Local Youth

LOS ANGELES (June 27, 2025) – The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks) is excited to partner with the Los Angeles County Parks Foundation to announce a $20,000 grant awarded by the National Hockey League. The grant comes at a crucial time, as the County faces unprecedented budget cuts. This funding will support the launch of free street youth hockey programming at select LA County Parks, offering a dynamic and accessible way to engage with the sport.

NHL STREETTM aims to create an affordable, neighborhood-based model that provides kids everywhere the opportunity to learn and play hockey. This effort is part of the NHL’s broader commitment to diversity and inclusion, championed by the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, a group of current and former NHL players, along with women’s professional hockey players, working to advance equity in the sport both on and off the ice rink.

This initiative aligns with LA County Parks’ commitment to providing public park access, programs, and services.  It provides a vital opportunity to expand programming and engaging youth through meaningful recreational opportunities.

“This partnership with the NHL helps bring valuable free sports opportunities to our youth,” said Norma E. García-González, Director of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. “In these challenging financial times, we are so grateful for this collaboration with the NHL and LA County Parks Foundation that allow us to continue providing free sports activities in our communities.”

The program will begin this summer at select parks in partnership with the NHL and RCX Sports. Activations will include street hockey equipment, sports clinics, and field trips to NHL games and events, ensuring kids experience hockey in fun, exciting, and memorable ways. This initiative not only introduces youth to the game but also invites their families to experience hockey together, helping build a new generation of fans.

“We are pleased to provide this grant to the Los Angeles County Parks Foundation and help bring street hockey programming to youth across Los Angeles County,” said Jeff Scott, NHL Group Vice President, Community Development and Industry Growth. “This initiative reflects our continued outreach to diverse communities and our goal of welcoming new fans into the hockey community.”

This initiative brings hockey to kids and their families through inclusive, community-based programming that highlights the best aspects of youth sports: fun, fitness, friendship, and lifelong memories.
