“From Embers” Wins Top Suspense Award at Houston International Film Festival
Houston, May 2, 2025 — From Embers, a Hollywood suspense film directed by Kate Bohan, was awarded the Platinum Remi for Best Suspense Film at the 58th Houston International Film Festival, held at River Oaks Theatre in Houston, Texas. The film also received the Remi Gold Award for Best Screenplay, marking a significant double win.
Produced during the challenging period of the 2023 Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strike, From Embers stood out for its compelling narrative and tightly woven suspense. The story follows Lily and her son Kevin as they navigate life after the mysterious death of her husband Ron. After moving into a modest apartment, Lily forms an unlikely connection with her troubled neighbor Marty, whose past may hold the key to unraveling the truth. As Lily delves deeper, she discovers a web of corporate deceit involving patent theft and sabotage, ultimately leading to a dramatic confrontation.

Kate Bohan is an acclaimed and award-winning Chinese-American filmmaker, writer, director, and producer. She began her journey in filmmaking in 2016, earning recognition for her exceptional screenwriting and directing skills. And in 1988, after receiving a BFA from the Beijing Broadcasting Institute where she majored in broadcasting, hosting, and journalism, Kate moved to Los Angeles from China with her family to follow her passion for film.
The Houston International Film Festival, founded in 1961, is one of North America’s oldest and most respected independent film festivals. Alongside the San Francisco and New York film festivals, it is known for supporting independent filmmakers through a wide array of awards. The Platinum Remi and Special Jury Awards are among the festival’s highest honors.
