New research shows Spanish skills deliver the highest value in American business, with specialized Asian languages commanding premium salaries

Learning a second language has always been considered a valuable skill, but which languages actually deliver the most professional value in today’s American workplace? A new study has uncovered which languages are most sought after by employers and which command the highest salaries.

“In an increasingly connected global economy, language skills can really help job seekers stand out from the rest,” explains Ana Peiris, Manager of Enrollments & Integration at Robertson College, a leading Canadian career-focused educational institution. “Our research shows that some languages are dramatically more valued in corporate settings than others, both in terms of demand and compensation.”

To identify which languages carry the most weight in corporate America, Robertson College analyzed recent job postings and salary data from Glassdoor, creating a Corporate Language Value Score that reflects both the number of job opportunities and compensation levels for bilingual professionals.

Spanish: America’s Most In-Demand Second Language

Spanish easily claims the top spot with a Corporate Language Value Score of 77.88, more than double the score of the next highest language. This dominance is driven by overwhelming demand, with 49,570 job postings requiring Spanish language skills in just a one-month period. 

While the average salary of $74,000 is actually the lowest among the top 10 languages, the sheer volume of opportunities makes Spanish proficiency an extremely valuable asset in the American job market.

“Spanish proficiency is highly sought after across virtually all industries in the US,” notes Ms. Peiris. “From healthcare and education to customer service and sales, organizations recognize the importance of serving Spanish-speaking communities effectively.”

Cantonese: High Value, High Compensation

Ranking second with a value score of 31.18, Cantonese speakers are in a particularly advantageous position in today’s job market. While the demand is substantially lower than Spanish with 841 job postings, Cantonese speakers command nearly double the compensation, with an average salary of $147,000 – the highest of any language in the top 10.

“Cantonese speakers often find opportunities in finance, international commerce, and technology sectors, particularly for roles involving business relationships with Hong Kong and southern China,” explains Ms. Peiris. “The premium salaries reflect the specialized nature of these positions and the relative scarcity of qualified candidates.”

Mandarin Chinese: Balancing Demand and Premium Pay

Mandarin Chinese ranks third with a score of 25.76, offering a strong combination of demand and compensation. With 1,829 job postings, it has the second-highest demand among all languages studied, while still commanding an impressive average salary of $124,500.

“Mandarin speakers are particularly valued in multinational corporations, financial services, and technology companies,” says Ms. Peiris. “With the importance of trade and business relationships with mainland China, professionals who can bridge communication gaps become invaluable to their organizations.”

Specialized Languages Command Premium Salaries

While less commonly spoken languages like Bengali, Hebrew, and Thai have fewer job postings, they offer surprisingly high compensation. Bengali, ranking fourth overall, shows only 109 job postings but boasts an average salary of $131,500. Similarly, Hebrew (ranked fifth) commands $97,500 with just 28 job postings.

“These specialized language skills often serve niche but high-value business needs,” notes Ms. Peiris. “Whether it’s supporting specific international markets or serving diverse communities within the US, these less common language abilities can be particularly valuable when paired with other professional qualifications.”

Spanish provides the largest number of opportunities across diverse sectors, while Asian languages like Mandarin, Cantonese, and Bengali command premium compensation in specialized roles. Methodology

To determine which languages are most valued in US corporate culture, Robertson College analyzed job posting and salary data from February 18, 2025, to March 18, 2025. The analysis focused on job opportunities explicitly requiring bilingual proficiency in specific languages.

Job posting data was collected from Glassdoor using the search term “[language] bilingual” to identify positions requiring proficiency in each language. Only listings posted within the prior month were included to ensure relevance, and duplicate postings were excluded.

Salary data was gathered using Glassdoor’s Salary Filter, recording both low and high salary estimates for each language to calculate average compensation. All amounts are shown in US dollars.

The Corporate Language Value Score was calculated using a weighted formula that combines normalized job posting volume (70% weight) and normalized average salary (30% weight). Languages were then ranked from highest to lowest based on this composite score.
