Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45) introduced the Protect Veteran Jobs Act to reinstate Veterans who have been removed or dismissed from federal employment without cause since President Trump empowered Elon Musk to indiscriminately purge the federal workforce. The bill also requires each executive branch agency to report to Congress on a quarterly basis the veterans who have been removed from civilian service roles and the justification for such removal.

“The men and women who have stepped up to serve our country deserve our support, not indiscriminate dismissal because of a misguided and chaotic political agenda. Veterans bring incredible value and expertise to our federal government and provide essential services to American families and servicemembers. It is critical we protect the livelihoods of veterans who have served our country honorably and who continue to do so through civilian service. Our veterans have always had our backs, and now it’s time we step up to have theirs,” said Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45).

Congressman Tran was joined by 45 co-sponsors in the House at the time of introduction.

The Protect Veteran Jobs Act is endorsed by VoteVets, AFGE, AMVETS, and the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO.

The federal government is the largest employer of veterans in the United States. Veterans comprise more than 30 percent of 2.3 million civilian federal employees. Under President Trump’s plan, hundreds of thousands of veterans could lose their jobs. The mass firing of Veterans from places such as the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense jeopardizes the federal government’s ability to deliver basic services to American servicemembers and undermines U.S. competitiveness and security on the global stage.

Federal careers offer Veterans an opportunity to continue serving their country and utilize their unique expertise to support national defense programs, Veteran’s services, and other essential government functions. This legislation honors our Veterans’ service to their country and protects the government services that working families rely on.

California’s 45th Congressional District is home to more than 18,000 Veterans.

“Firing veterans who perform essential duties isn’t government efficiency, it’s cruel. Service Members deserve opportunities to transition back into the workforce and should be guaranteed support – not the added stress of unemployment. We applaud the congressman’s effort to right this wrong and proudly endorse his bill,” said VoteVets.

“Veterans make up a significant portion of the federal workforce, bringing unparalleled experience, dedication, and a steadfast work ethic to agencies that serve the American people. Many of these veterans are also proud union members, working in roles that protect our nation’s infrastructure, provide essential public services, and uphold the very democratic institutions they once swore to defend. However, recent actions have threatened their employment stability, leaving them vulnerable to unjust dismissals and political purges. The Protect Veteran Jobs Act provides a necessary safeguard by allowing for the reinstatement of veterans who were unfairly removed from their civil service positions. Additionally, the legislation’s reporting requirements create much-needed transparency and accountability, ensuring that no veteran is unjustly pushed out of the workforce without scrutiny. These measures are essential in upholding our nation’s promise to those who have served and ensuring that their rights as workers—and as veterans—are protected. The Union Veterans Council stands firmly in support of this bill and urges swift congressional action to pass it,” said William Attig, Executive Director of the Union Veterans Council AFL-CIO.
