Director Hu Mei brings “Dream of the Red Chamber: A Perfect Marriage” to Hollywood big screen
Los Angeles — On the evening of February 10, 2025, ” Dream of the Red Chamber: A Perfect Marriage” debuted on the Hollywood big screen, and a New Year screening was held at the famous Hollywood Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. The scene was very lively. Director Hu Mei and the main creative team members had in-depth exchanges with the audience.
At this special moment of the Spring Festival of the Year of the Snake, it brought a warm cultural feast to the Chinese in Los Angeles, and also attracted many foreign audiences. 98-year-old Oscar Lifetime Judge Lisa Lu was present to watch this film she play a role in it in mainland China when she was 93 years old! The film’s visual effects director Zheng Wei also came to watch the film and congratulate, answering the audience’s technical. Wang Taiyu, Counselor of the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles, Consul Chai Yun, co-producer , Mebo International Board of Directors Li Li, and representatives from the overseas Chinese, cultural, business and other circles attended the event. Director Hu Mei said, “The work we brought this time is both a new chapter and an old one. The film was shot in 2018, but due to the impact of many factors such as the epidemic, it went through a lot of twists and turns. It was not until that day that it finally crossed the ocean and was screened here for the first time. I am able to present this work to Chinese moviegoers in Los Angeles during the Spring Festival as a holiday gift, and I hope everyone will like this movie.”
Director Hu Mei emphasized, “Regarding the origin of the title ‘A Perfect Marriage’, you will naturally understand it after watching the whole film. In fact, we implicitly satirize the unfortunate love between the young man and woman that the parents determined was named ‘A Good Marriage’, but in fact this ‘A Perfect Marriage’ is false, tragic, and even destructive to human nature. This is the critical theme of our film, which has been revealed in the title. I believe that after you watch the whole movie, you will definitely get your own recognition of the title.”
After the film screening, director Hu Mei took the leading actors and the main creative team to the stage and had an in-depth exchange with the audience. She especially talked about the theme of the film revolving around the theme of “A perfect Marriage”, and the main storyline revolved around the love entanglement between Baoyu, Daiyu, and Baochai, focusing on the four major families who had to promote the marriage of Baoyu and Baochai in order to solve the financial crisis, which led to the classic tragedy of “Dream of the Red Chamber ” where love was broken and people were sad.
A major feature of the film is that most of the main actors are teenagers around 14 years old, in order to restore the real age of the characters in the story to the greatest extent. The film also presents many classic scenes from the original novel, including Jia Baoyu’s trance in the universe, Granny Liu’s visit to the Grand View Garden, Princess Yuan’s visit to her parents, Daiyu burying flowers, and Daiyu burning her manuscripts and breaking up with love.
