Los Angeles County to Mark January 29 as Lunar New Year Celebration Kickoff

Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles County Supervisor Chair Pro Tem Hilda L. Solis and Chair Kathryn Barger introduced a motion to officially proclaim January 29, 2025, as the beginning of Lunar New Year celebrations in Los Angeles County, marking the start of the Year of the Snake. The proclamation recognizes the cultural significance of the Lunar New Year for the Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, who make up approximately 25 percent of the County’s population.

“The Lunar New Year is a time for families to come together and honor their ancestors, while also looking ahead to the future,” said Chair Pro Tem Solis. “In Los Angeles, where our AAPI communities contribute to the rich fabric of our culture, this holiday offers an opportunity to celebrate that diversity and recognize the strength and resilience of these communities. As we usher in the Year of the Snake, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusion and unity.”

Lunar New Year is widely celebrated by many Asian and Pacific Islander cultures, and it marks the first day of the lunar calendar, with festivities lasting for up to two weeks. The tradition has been observed for centuries, emphasizing family reunions, cultural rituals, and the honoring of deities and ancestors. This year, celebrations will begin on January 29, 2025, and will continue into early February.

In addition to the proclamation, the motion calls on County Communications to promote Lunar New Year events across Los Angeles County through the County’s website and social media channels, ensuring the information is accessible in AAPI languages to reach as many residents as possible.
