88 FOR 28: ALIGNING LOS ANGELES COUNTY CITIES AHEAD OF OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC GAMES

LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved Chair Lindsey P. Horvath’s motion to align Los Angeles County’s 88 cities in preparation for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. While the City of Los Angeles holds the bid for the 2028 Games, many sports competitions will utilize venues throughout the Los Angeles region. All cities have a role to play in welcoming the world and bringing Angelenos together.

“Through 88 for 28, Los Angeles County will bring all of our diverse and culturally rich cities together to maximize the many economic, cultural, and social benefits of the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Chair Lindsey P. Horvath. “Los Angeles County is uniquely positioned to invite cities, as well as our unincorporated communities, to the table to coordinate activities and actions over the next four years. There is so much to do and no time to waste – Los Angeles County is ready to get to work in partnership with our committed municipalities.”

The motion creates a framework to bring Los Angeles County’s 88 cities together regularly over the next four years to coordinate planning efforts and to ensure the Games are inclusive and reflect the vibrant diversity of Los Angeles County. Los Angeles County’s Chief Executive Office will serve as the lead coordinating body, in coordination with the Department of Parks and Recreation given the convening role they play with cities managing the countywide parks system.

“Santa Monica is excited to welcome the world to our shores in 2028,” said Santa Monica City Manager David White. “Our city’s tourism and leisure industry is growing and thriving, and we’ve already begun a robust planning process to coordinate across all departments and with our community partners to prepare to celebrate the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in the Los Angeles region. We are looking forward to continuing our coordinated efforts across the region.”

Quarterly meetings with the 88 cities will begin after January 1, 2025. Topics of the convenings should include but are not limited to: arts and culture, legislative advocacy, safety, sustainability, the identification of potential practice and training facilities for teams, and fan zones (planning and locations). Existing convenings the County holds with cities should be used as appropriate.

“I fully support Supervisor Horvath’s motion to create a regional approach for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics,” said Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub. “This collaborative effort will ensure that our entire region benefits from the Games, fostering unity, economic growth, and lasting infrastructure improvements.”

Eighty-eight for 28 follows previous actions by the Board of Supervisors to prepare the Los Angeles County region for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The City of Los Angeles holds the bid and is the official host for the 2028 Games and they have a contract with LA28, which is a private nonprofit entity that serves as the organizing committee for the Games.

The motion directs the Chief Executive Office to:

  • Develop a webpage with up-to-date information on the Games, a directory of key contacts for cities and other partners to access, and a catalog of available practice and training facilities as identified by the cities and the County for teams.
  • Upon the completion of the catalogue of training and practice facilities, develop a marketing plan to promote sites to countries through local Consulates.
  • Report back in 45 days with recommendations to establish a County Olympics team for coordinating and executing all County-related Olympic and Paralympic activities including all previous Board directives.
