Los Angeles Unified Announces Summer of Learning 2023

Dynamic new programs and opportunities for students to catch up or accelerate their learning

Los Angeles, CA (April 12, 2023) – Los Angeles Unified today announced a dynamic slate of summer school programs available to all students in the District. Summer of Learning programs include credit recovery and learning loss opportunities (Grades ETK through 12), options for enrichment and accelerating students toward graduation (virtual enrichment and Beyond the Bell Summer Programs) and specialized programs for specific student groups (preschool, Extended School Year for students with disabilities, International Newcomer Enrichment Summer Program and the Migrant Education Program). Families should contact their school to register.

“Los Angeles Unified’s Summer of Learning programs are critical to address learning loss, provide individualized instructional support and offer unparalleled acceleration options for our students,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “The District will not stop until we have made up ground that was lost during the pandemic, accelerate our students to their greatest potential and position Los Angeles Unified as the district of choice for families.”

The core summer programs begin on June 26 and conclude on July 25 and are available to all students in Grades ETK through 12. Students in Grades TK through 8 can participate in the Beyond the Bell Summer Enrichment Program June 13 through July 28, with in-person activities focusing on academic, physical, creative and social-emotional development. Students in Grades TK through 12 can join the virtual Summer Enrichment program June 26 through July 28 where they can enjoy exciting subjects like learning to play the guitar or ukulele, 2D game design and animation, dance and music, STEM courses and many more.

“This year’s summer programming will include engaging science lessons, outdoor education, and a new addition, an Arts Camp offering visual arts, music and dance,” Chief Academic Officer Frances Baez said. “Los Angeles Unified will also provide a wider choice of paid internship opportunities for our youth.”

As depicted in the 2022-26 Strategic Plan and under the leadership of Superintendent Carvalho, the District’s summer offerings have been enhanced to mitigate pandemic learning loss and credit recovery, as well as provide enrichment opportunities for students seeking challenging academic experiences. In combination with initiatives that address chronic absenteeism, increase enrollment, provide tutoring options and create new programs to foster dynamic choices for families, the District’s work is demonstrating early signs of success.

“Summers are a time for fun, and this year we are making learning and enrichment part of the adventure,” Board President Jackie Goldberg said. “Our summer program will give students a chance to focus on specific skills and prepare for graduation with dynamic classes designed to keep students engaged.”

“Our Summer of Learning is one of Los Angeles Unified’s most important programs,” Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “Through it, we can address learning loss by providing all the key elements: in-person academic support, virtual interest-based options, credit recovery, enrichment and after school, and just as importantly, meals for our families who need them. We are proud to be here all year, for our school communities.”

“This year’s Summer of Learning offers a broad selection of learning, enrichment and experiential opportunities for our students,” Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna III said. “I hope that our families find programs that meet the unique needs of their children.”

“Our summer programs offer essential support for working families while enhancing student opportunities to learn and grow,” Board Member Dr. Rocío Rivas said. “My son has had many positive experiences with LAUSD’s summer school, which introduced him to electives that he didn’t have time to explore during the regular school year. Especially in Board District 2, I am hopeful that the array of programs offered will engage our students as we continue to amend pandemic learning loss and encourage more students to return to campus.”

“Learning happens year-round, which is why it’s so important that Los Angeles Unified is offering an expansive array of academic and enrichment options for students of all grade levels this summer,” Board Member Nick Melvoin said. “I’m excited for every kid in Los Angeles Unified to have the opportunity for another great summer of learning, exploring and playing.”

“Our students deserve every opportunity to deepen their knowledge, close academic gaps and gain credits to better prepare them for a new school year,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “I encourage families to register their children to participate in a summer of learning, enrichment and fun!”
