Roosevelt Elementary Named to be the Mandarin DLI Campus

Language Added in Response to Parent Input

Anaheim, Calif. – Anaheim Elementary School District (AESD) grows its Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program with the Board of Education voting to add Mandarin to its 2023-2024 curriculum. Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School has been officially named the campus for the program with Dr. Anna Bae Kim at the helm to serve as principal.

“We’re excited to add a new language to our DLI program,” said Dr. Christopher Downing, superintendent at AESD. “Studies have shown that a new language creates a strong foundation for academic success and career opportunities later in life. Our renowned DLI program sets our amazing Anaheim community apart from many school districts and we cannot wait to have Mandarin spoken in our classrooms.”

Just like English, Mandarin is one of the most spoken languages in the world. More than 63 percent of AESD families surveyed voted to have Mandarin added to the curriculum. Roosevelt will host DLI Mandarin classes starting with TK next school year and will grow the program annually.

“TK is a great year for children to learn a new language,” said Dr. Kim. “Studies show that children are like sponges and can learn new languages at a faster rate the earlier they start. I feel honored to be able lead this program at Roosevelt Elementary next school year.”

Mandarin will be the third language in AESD’s Dual Language Immersion program along with Spanish and Korean.
