Assembly District 49 Special Primary Election on Feb 15, 2022
LOS ANGELES, CA – January 19, 2022 – A special primary election will be held on February 15, 2022 to fill the vacancy of the current 49th Assembly District seat, resulting from the resignation of Assemblymember Ed Chau to serve as a judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. The 49th Assembly District includes Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, Temple City, and portions of Montebello and South El Monte.
As special elections typically have low turnout, the Center for Asian Americans United for Self-Empowerment (CAUSE) is sharing voter and election information and encouraging voters to cast their ballot. The new representative elected to the 49th Assembly seat will represent one of two Asian-majority districts in California.
Should a candidate receive 50% +1 of the votes, the top vote-getter will be elected to fill the vacancy. If no candidate receives 50% +1 of the votes, the top two vote-getters will advance to the special general election that is scheduled on April 19, 2022. With the recent passing of Assembly Bill 37 in September 2021, local elections like this one are now included in the newly expanded mail-in ballot system where all active registered voters in California will automatically be mailed ballots in all future elections.
“Following CAUSE’s successful efforts to ensure Asian American voting rights are protected in the West San Gabriel Valley in the recent redistricting process, it is critical that the voters in the 49th Assembly District are aware that there is an upcoming special election, which will affect one of the largest Asian American communities in the nation.” said Nancy Yap, CAUSE Executive Director.

- January 6, 2022- Mailing of Voter Information Guides begin
- January 17, 2022 – Mailing of vote-by-mail ballots begin
- January 18, 2022 – Ballot dropoff locations open.
- Early voting begins at LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office in Norwalk (12400 Imperial Highway, Room 3002, Norwalk, CA 90650)
- Early Voting Days and Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 8 AM – 5 PM (Closed weekends and holidays)
- Election Day: 7 AM – 8 PM
- January 31, 2022 – Last day to register to vote
- February 1, 2022 – Same-day voter registration begins
- February 5, 2022 – Vote Centers open for in-person voting
- February 15, 2022 – Election Day; ballot drop off locations and Vote Centers open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. （CAUSE）
