Sacramento–California’s unemployment rate increased to 4.2% in December while the state’s employers added 24,500 non-farm payroll jobs, according to the California Employment Development Department.
The U.S. unemployment rate increased by 0.2% to 3.9%, and the nation’s employers added 312,000 non-farm payroll jobs.
In December 2017, the state unemployment rate was 4.5%. The unemployment rate is derived from a federal survey of 5,100 Californian households.
Non-farm payroll jobs in California totaled 17,287,200 in December, according to a survey of businesses that are larger and less variable statistically.
The survey of 71,000 California businesses measures jobs in the economy. The year-over change from December 2017 to December 2018 shows an increase of 284,300 jobs.
