Former High School Tennis Coach Sentenced to 4 Years for Lewd Acts with Minor

Los Angeles–A 27-year-old man was sentenced today to four years in state prison after he was convicted of having a sexual relationship with an underage girl, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

At today’s court appearance, Timothy Van Phuoc Dang of West Covina pleaded no contest to two felony counts: meeting minor for lewd purposes and sodomy of person under 18.

In addition to Dang’s prison sentence, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Cathryn F. Brougham also ordered the defendant to register as a lifetime sex offender.

Deputy District Attorney Presciliano Duran of the Victim Impact Program, who prosecuted the case, said at the time of the crime Dang was a tennis coach at Schurr High School in Montebello.

The defendant allegedly had a sexual relationship with a female teenager from October 2014 to July 2015, the prosecutor said. The majority of the sex acts occurred in the city of Monterey Park, according to the prosecutor.

A concerned citizen alerted school police about the alleged sexual relationship between Dang and the girl, the prosecutor said. Law enforcement was then notified and arrested Dang on Sept. 12, 2016.

The case was investigated by the Monterey Park Police Department.
